College Holding Run for Congo Women

Event Being Held in Conjunction with Westheimer Peace Symposium

October 8, 2013

ONLINE REGISTRATION

Author Lisa Shannon describes the Democratic Republic of Congo as “the worst place in the world for women” — in fact, she wrote a book about her journeys into this region of Africa.

In connection with Shannon’s presentation, “A Thousand Sisters,” at this month’s Westheimer Peace Symposium (Oct. 16), Wilmington College is holding a 5-kilometer Run for Congo Women Oct. 19, at 10 a.m., at WC’s cross country course.

The Westheimer Peace Symposium and Center for Service and Civic Engagement are co-sponsoring the event through Women to Women International, which supports women in war and post-war regions.

Proceeds will go toward aiding Congolese women in a country that is enduring a humanitarian crisis with an estimated 5.4 million persons killed there since 1998. Women are routinely gang-raped and murdered.

Since 1993, Women for Women International has helped thousands of female survivors of war, civil strife and other conflicts rebuild their lives and regain their sense of self. Support will go for such assistance as job skills training, rights awareness education, trauma counseling and small business assistance so they can rebuild their lives.

Cost for the 5K run is $5 for students ($10 with T-shirt) and
$20 for adults ($25 with a T-shirt).
Registration is free of charge for all active duty service members ($5 with a T-shirt).

The cross country course is located behind the YMCA and WC’s Hermann Court on Elm St., which is situated on the southern part of the College campus. It features a true cross country course running through the College farm and arboretum, woods, a small creek and practice fields.

Free parking is available in all Wilmington College lots.

Persons can register the day of the race or, to ensure a T-shirt, via Wilmington College’s Website at www.wilmington.edu. Look for the Run for Congo Women rotating banner at the bottom of the page.
