Athletic Training

The Athletic Training Major is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). After the last accreditation site visit Wilmington was granted the maximum ten-year accreditation period. The next accreditation site visit will occur in 2022. Students completing the degree program are eligible for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination to become Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC). Students are also eligible for the Ohio Licensing exam upon earning their ATC credentials.

Due to the highly individualized nature of this major, established ratios of clinical instructors to students, and the competitive secondary admission policy, all athletic training students are considered pre-professional during their first two semesters. After satisfactory completion of the pre-professional requirements, students are admitted to the professional phase of the curriculum. This includes advanced courses and clinical education. Wilmington's AT curriculum surpasses the national standards for accreditation. The clinical program also provides a comprehensive and diverse field experience that helps students develop their hands on (clinical) skills.

Wilmington's AT program is one of the oldest and largest programs in the state of Ohio.  Our reputation for producing quality graduates reaches far and wide.  Established in 1978 by WC Athletics Hall of Fame member, Roger Tewksbury, and Medical Director, Dr. John Turba,  the athletic training program at WC has a long and impressive history of producing high quality ATCs.  When it comes to networking, WC students have a unique advantage over other students due to the large number of WC graduates in the profession as well as the notable positions our graduates hold. For instance, our grads work as head athletic trainers for college and professional sports teams, and other graduates have continued their education to become Medical Doctors, Physician's Assistants, Physical Therapists, College Professors, and Teachers to list just a few.

Athletic Training is a four-year program of study based on a solid foundation in the liberal arts with emphasis in the professional study of Sports Medicine. Practical job experience is provided by combining academic preparation with supervised clinical experiences. The program of study leads to a baccalaureate degree (B.S.) in Athletic Training.
