Jan has a long history of being very passionate about the education of students with disabilities and “making life work” for folks with disabilities.  She has held a professional Ohio license in Elementary education (1-8) as well as Education of the Handicapped –MH/OH (K-12); she also has many years of experience in higher education, both teaching, as well as running service programs.

She truly enjoys mentoring and coaching students and new teachers in understanding and believing that they can help people with disabilities be successful and make life work. Her special education background, particularly in Transition Services, is the foundation for her skill at finding alternative methods to get students to learn, and get parents involved. She looks at “difficult” students as a welcomed challenge and has frequently used technology to encourage students to engage in their education.

She has extensive experience with assistive technology in education and has developed software for students when available commercial software was not meeting their needs. She has developed and implemented IEP’s for a variety of individuals with special needs in a range of settings, from pre-school through high school, residential programs, sheltered workshops, transition programs, and leisure and recreation programs. Jan and her husband developed and ran a Clubhouse for adults with traumatic brain injuries and other disabilities.

Specific areas of interest: assistive technology, transition services, family and professional collaboration, as well as traumatic brain injury.
