On September 19, 1963, at Morgan State College (now Morgan State University), 12 students founded what is now the nation's fifth largest, predominately African-American Social Service Fraternity: Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated.
Today, Iota Phi Theta consists of over 250 chapters located in 40 states, the District of Columbia and the Republic of Korea including 12 undergrad chapters in the state of Ohio. Iota Phi Theta also successfully joined National Affiliations with The National Interfraternity Conference (NIC) and The National Pan - Hellenic Council (NPHC). Moreover, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated is honored to be the only predominantly African - American National Fraternity at Wilmington College.
Through the leadership of brother Lawrence Yates The Beta Delta Chapter of Iota Phi Theta was formed! He formed The Beta Delta Chapter with the intent of doing something never done before and forcing change within the Wilmington College Community. Initially the chapter was chartered in the Spring of 1984, the Beta Delta Chapter of Iota Phi Theta returned to Wilmington in the year of 2012 following a 12-year hiatus. The Fraternity as a whole continues to grow and strengthen, so will its commitment to make meaningful contributions to society in general, with particular emphasis in the African - American community. Throughout America, Iota Phi Theta has come to represent excellence in all areas. The Fraternity is, and shall forever remain dedicated to its Founders' vision of "Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One!"
