Black History Month at Wilmington College features numerous events and activities designed for the campus community to not only celebrate the contributions of the African American community but also to delve into cultural insight and challenges facing the nation and the campus involving race.
Programming includes music and dance, guest speakers, reflections from WC students, a film series and joint ventures with Sinclair State Community College. Events are both in-person and virtual.
BHM activities kick off Feb. 4 when WC is invited to attend the 7th annual Black Unity Conference, titled "The Sum of Us...," held virtually at Sinclair State. The always-popular Black History Month Luncheon will feature motivational speaker Chris Scott Feb. 9, followed on the 10th with another event with Sinclair State, "'The Meeting' — What if Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Had Had a Private Strategy Session?"
Black Student Initiative is launching a discussion series focused on the black male experience at WC on Feb. 15, while the next day's lunch hour will feature a solo guitar performance by Ves Akimbo. That evening, Feb. 16, a Virtual Paint Party with Soul Palette is on tap. On Feb. 18 and 22, students who participated in last fall's diversity trip to Washington, D.C., will share reflections of their Civil Rights tour of the nation's capital.
A Black History Trivia Day will be featured both at lunchtime and in the evening on Feb. 21. The next night, a virtual program, "Strength Comes from Within — A Conversation with Terry Crews," will feature the actor, activist and former professional football player speaking on overcoming obstacles. In a tribute to classic R&B artists, WC is offering a twist on the traditional late-night breakfast theme with live music featuring Cincinnati's The Storeyline & Dee Marie.
A special virtual program on Feb. 24 will feature College alumni, who participated in the legendary campus demonstration by African American students, reflecting on the 1971 event and how it continues to resonate in their lives. An excursion to Dayton is slated for Feb. 27 when the campus community has an opportunity to attend a performance by the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company titled "Inside Out."
Finally, the Black Student Initiative Movie Series will feature opportunities to view and discuss three films, Judas & the Black Messiah, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and Green Book.
