Wilmington College students have been returning to campus in small clusters before next week’s onslaught and the start of Fall Semester classes on Aug. 19. The institution is set to start its 154th academic year.
The trickle of returning students began days ago with members of the Residence Life staff and Peer Navigators starting their training and preparation for the arrival of more than 300 new students and hundreds of returning students between Aug. 13 and 18.
A Wilmington College tradition especially appreciated by parents, a bevy of returning students — many representing athletics teams and student organizations — will assist freshmen and transfer students move their belongings into the residence halls on Thursday.
The New Student Orientation program starts that afternoon following lunch and family goodbyes. The new students will first be introduced to their Peer Navigators, who will assist them throughout the four-day orientation program, followed by sessions focusing on their safety and the necessity of making informed decisions. Over the next few days, highlights include the popular Playfair program, which provides opportunities for meeting classmates in a fun and mutually respectful setting, the New Student Convocation, introductions to the greater community and programs addressing conflict resolution, diversity and community service. Other social gatherings include a Foam Party, Paint Party, and pizza, fun and games downtown, the latter of which is sponsored by Main Street Wilmington.
Most of those new students will be greeted with newly installed air conditioning and windows in Austin and Pickett halls, which are primary residence halls for freshmen. Other major projects this summer are the ongoing renovation of the ground floor of Bailey Hall and the resurfacing of the 400-meter Beckett Track at Williams Stadium. A new and enhanced lighting system also was installed at the stadium.
Also, faculty members will have their summer meeting next week and all employees will gather on Tuesday for the annual Opening Year Meeting at which President Corey Cockerill will present her vision and expectations for the coming year.
