College Mourning the Passing of Sophomore Tony Crane

Wilmington College is mourning the devastating loss of a student, Tony Crane, who died in the early hours of Sunday morning. Today’s (March 24) classes are canceled. Counselors and the campus minister have set aside from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Jones Meetinghouse for students, faculty and staff to gather to help navigate the shock and feelings of loss associated with the passing of the sophomore football player and member of Delta Theta Sigma (DTS) fraternity from Fishers, IN. Counselors are also available for one-on-one and smaller group meetings.

WC President Corey Cockerill, who is on College business in Washington, D.C., expressed her personal and the College’s deep sadness over Tony’s passing: “Our hearts are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. Tony was a valued member of our campus community, and his loss is felt deeply by all who knew him. We will continue to hold Tony's family and friends in the light.”

Kevin Burke, head football coach, said everyone associated with the College’s football program is “devastated” by Tony’s passing. “He was a tremendous person and teammate and was well respected throughout our campus community,” he said. “We will lean heavily on each other as we navigate the grief process and figure out how to move forward individually and as a team.”

Sigrid Solomon, vice president for student affairs and dean of students, said the campus is fortunate to be part of a unique community of staff, faculty and students who “care deeply” for one another. “This tragic loss has brought us even closer together, reinforcing the strength of our bond. We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from our community members, parents and alumni during this difficult time.”

Solomon said the College community has “truly rallied around one another, offering care, comfort and support as we navigate through this painful experience together.” WC’s Housing and Residence Life Team has been actively meeting with students in the residence halls, offering support and comfort. Additionally, Counseling Services and Campus Ministry have set aside intentional time for the entire campus community to “drop in, shed a tear, sit in silence, or share memories of Tony.”

"We are united in our grief, and we will continue to support one another as we navigate this heartbreaking time together,” Solomon added.”

Several student organizations are planning a memorial service on campus to honor Tony’s memory. Information regarding a vigil or service will be provided when available.
