Wilmington College’s new partnership with Coursera Career Academy provides students and alumni with opportunities for some 70 professional certifications designed to make them more marketable in their career tracks. In this initial year, WC’s faculty and staff also can take advantage of this unique opportunity.
Globally respected companies have attached their corporate brands to certifications in courses like Adobe Content Creation, Meta Social Media Marketing, Keller-Williams Real Estate, IBM Data Science, HR Certification Institute Human Resources Associate, Salesforce Sales Operation and Google Certification for Management. Those organizations — not Wilmington College — issue the credentials for satisfactorily completing their certification programs.
Eric McLaughlin, director of Career Services and Workforce Development, is managing the newly available program at WC. “It is open to students in all majors and alumni of any program,” he said, noting that some credentials may also be endorsed by the American Council of Education and are eligible for College credit.
McLaughlin said the menu of available certifications is based on in-demand jobs and those with the highest growth projections over the next decade. “This is a good way to add an in-demand skill to complement students’ and alumni’s Wilmington College education,” he added.
“Many employers have indicated they’re more likely to hire candidates with these certifications, while also offering increased earning potential for entry-level positions, even for non-tech and STEM fields. The goal is to make our students and alumni more competitive in the workforce.”
