Ohio Campus Compact recognized Hammond and other “exceptional” students from across the state for their “tireless dedication to community service.” The award is named in honor of the former Ohio University president that was a tireless advocate for campus-community partnerships.
Hammond is a senior majoring in public history and plans to graduate next month.
He has embraced community service since coming to Wilmington College as a freshman and that initial activism led to three positions on the Student Leader Executive Board that culminated with his serving as president. The College’s Grow Food, Grow Hope outreach for building a local food capacity was a central focus of his work.
That involvement dovetailed into managing community service and philanthropy for his fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, which donated more than a thousand pounds of nonperishable food items to a local food pantry. Also, as a member of the College’s swim team, Hammond helped raise funds for the Ted Mullin Foundation through the annual Hour of Power, while as part of the team he gave swimming lessons to area youth.
“I am so proud of being involved in so many service-based activities and, due to my service experience, I want to continue to make a difference in the surrounding community,” he said.
“It is an amazing feeling knowing that the projects I have been involved in have helped change people’s lives — this has truly changed my life as well,” Hammond added. “The opportunity of being part of such change is why I continue to want to serve the community.”
