Performer, Composer, Educator and Activist Dr. Ysaye Barnwell Will Conduct Free Seminar
A public workshop on the topic, “Building a Vocal Community: Singing in the African-American Tradition, will be held Thursday (March 3), from 7:30 to 9 p.m., in the McCoy Room of Kelly Center.
Performer, composer, educator and activist Dr. Ysaye Barnwell will conduct the seminar as the first program in Wilmington College’s observance of Women’s History Month. It is a collaborative project among WC, Central State University and the Miami University Regionals.
During the past 28 years, Barnwell’s workshops have been conducted on three continents, making her work in the field a significant source of inspiration for both singers and non-singers, as well as a model of pedagogy for educators, and cultural activists and historians.
Barnwell appears as a vocalist and/or instrumentalist on more than 30 recordings with Sweet Honey In The Rock and other artists. She has, for the past 30 years, spent much of her time off-stage working as a master teacher and choral clinician in African American cultural performance.
The event is free of charge.
