Training Conducted at Student Resource Center Two Wilmington College juniors received training program certification as a result of their instruction and experience in tutoring peers at WC’s Student Resource Center (SRC). Lay earned this endorsement from the College Reading & Learning Association after successfully completing 25 hours of direct tutoring and 10 hours of mandated training. Brown is a communication arts/English major from Xenia while Lay is an exercise science major from Waynesville. SRC manager Brook Edwards said the certification indicates the students completed the requirements and engaged in best practices for assisting students. The training included basic center operations, methods of working with students, best tutoring practices and addressing challenges in learning, study skills and ethics. “Both Keni and Cassie began their job training at the SRC by shadowing experienced writing assistants and then, as their training progressed, they moved on to their own appointments,” he said, noting they are providing a great service that helps ensure their fellow students’ academic success. Wilmington College is among more than 1,000 colleges that utilize CRLA’s training programs, which provide professionals with the opportunity to create, improve and expand tutor and mentor training for a campus’ unique programs.
