Food Symposium Looking at Sugar from Many Perspectives — Including as Art
Sugar conjures images of many things: chocolate chip cookies, sticky bun pastries, peppermint ice cream, pecan pie and angel food cake, to name a few. But sugar as art might not be as readily considered.

Wilmington College is putting an end to that as its accentuates its “Sugar Rushed” theme for the seventh annual Food Symposium March 30 with a sugar cube sculpture competition. It’s open to area students in elementary school, middle/high school and adult — with cash prizes to the winners.
Contestants can create a sculpture out of sugar cubes, using no more than three ingredients: sugar cubes, glue and a coloring of choice (if desired). No more than two pounds of sugar cubes can be used and entries should be submitted on a base such as a cardboard cutout, tray or plate. The dimensions of the entire sculpture, including the tray, should be no more than two feet in all directions.

The sculptures will be on display throughout the day’s programming that features the film, Sugar-Coated, a food expo, student research panel, candy-making competition and tasting, and a panel of professionals discussing “Sugar and Wellness.” For a complete schedule, click here.
